Hatoma Island belongs to the Yaeyama Island group which boasts of paradisical beaches, untouched tropical rainforests, lush mangrove rivers and one of the world’s largest coral reef systems.
Those islands are also known as one of the world’s best diving destinations, having a number of coral species and marine lives as large as those in the Great Barrier Reef. (Over 400 types of corals, 5 types of sea turtles, manta rays, whale sharks and all kinds of tropical fish species all live around Okinawa.)

We’d come here to catch an hour or two of sun on this day, but the overcasting of cloud cover never disappeared, and we didn’t stay long. Long enough however, for me to play with my camera, getting these photos and those in the previous set of small puakalanu (crown flower milkweed).

The cloud cover helped me get the pleasing blue reflections on this natural lava-black sand beach.

This snorkeling bay and small black sand beach is the most hospitable shoreline stretch of Honoka‘ope Bay, for it is flanked on both sides by short cliffs: The real estate here has been captured within a highend gated community of -4mil luxury vacation home sites.

Hono is Hawaiian for bay, and kā‘ope is a rare, yellowish mother-of-pearl shell (none of which I’ve ever seen on our visits here), so the name hints at this being a very valued bay for those in Hawai‘i of old who had once named it.
